Drone Mapping

Here's what I use to fly and process a mission.

  • 3DR Solo Smart Drone

    This is the drone I use. It's pretty neat.

    Nice little camera, very rugged, but it has a Fisheye lense.

  • 3DR Tower Capture App

    Tower is an open source mission planning app that runs on Android devices. There are other capture apps, check the links on left for other apps. Here's a link to a really good video on how to plan and fly a mission using Tower Tower Tutorial for 3DR Solo

  • Drone2Map for ArcGIS

    Drone2Map for ArcGIS creates professional imagery products from still photos captured by drones. I'm a software engineer at Esri and I'm currently one of the developers working on Drone2Map for ArcGIS.

  • Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge

    Mainly I just use my smart phone to plan a mission and capture imagery using 3DR Tower. You should be able to use pretty much any Android device.

  • Acer Iconia A1-830 Tablet

    Occasionally I use my Acer tablet to plan missions, however it doesn't have a cellular connection so you have to pre-fetch imagery if you are going to plan your mission in the field. Here's a link to a video on how to pre-fetch maps in Tower Tower Offline Maps (Mapbox) Tutorial

  • Tower Tagger

    This is software that I developed to geolocate image. You can also use Mission Planner to tag the images with their geolocation, but I prefered to write my own little app. I'll make it available for download in the near future when I finish documentation and packaging.

  • Orthomosaic

    An Orthomosaic image of the entire project area mosaicing all the individual photos shot by the drone into a single image.

  • Hillshade

    In addition to producing a Digital Surface Model (DSM) Drone2Map for ArcGIS also produces a Hillshaded version of the DSM.

  • 3D Mesh

    Drone2Map for ArcGIS also has the ability to produce a 3D model of the project area.

  • 3D PDF

  • Point Cloud

    Drone2Map for ArcGIS produces a Point Cloud of the project area with RGB and Height Values.

    The textured mesh published as a web scene view to ArcGIS.com. Click here to open the Web Scene Viewer. Give it a little time to load then use the mouse to tilt and zoom.
